August 1 Puerto Vallarta News Brief & Upcoming Events

August 1, 2014

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - There's always so much going on in Puerto Vallarta and around Banderas Bay, it can be difficult to keep up with it all. Here's a look at some of this week's Puerto Vallarta news headlines and community announcements, plus a couple of upcoming local events that you won't want to miss.

PuRR Project Seeks Volunteer Veterinarian

PuRR Project, a no-kill feline shelter about 40 minutes north of Vallarta, is looking for a vet tech to assist our shelter veterinarian two to three hours twice a week. Duties include administering FIV/leukemia tests, vaccinating and deworming of new intakes plus diagnosing and treating any infections or wounds in the yard population. If you're a retired vet or vet tech, or have some training as a vet, and speak some Spanish, we need you! This is a non-paid position, but the rewards are many, including working with a dedicated group of people with a passion for making a significant difference in the lives of our rescued cats. If you qualify or would like more information, please email Marilyn Khan at exkhan(at)usfamily.net

Delta to Introduce Seattle/Tacoma-Puerto Vallarta Flights on December 20

Working to make Sea-Tac Airport a West Coast hub for its international flights, Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines is adding another new route from its growing Seattle/Tacoma hub. The airline says it plans to start flying nonstop from Sea-Tac Airport to Puerto Vallarta in December. Only SeaTac-based Alaska Airlines now flies that route. SEA-Puerto Vallarta, Mexico service will be initiated on December 20 with Boeing 737-800s, flying three times weekly between Sea-Tac and the Mexican resort city three times weekly starting December 20, 2014. Delta will reduce frequency to once a week beginning Jan. 12.

Latin Fest Takes Marina Riviera Nayarit Stage

The first ever Latin Fest Riviera Nayarit will be held at the Marina Riviera Nayarit on August 1-2. This weekend you'll be able to enjoy free dance presentations, live music, tastings, drinks and plenty of fiesta. The event was organized in order to promote the Marina's local businesses, which are offering promotions to the public to showcase their products. The festivities begin at 7 pm on Friday and Saturday with a presentation of the hottest Latin salsa rhythms courtesy of Pedrito & D’Cuba Son. The choreography sets will be handled by seven regional dance academies: N'Movimiento, Salsa Class, Anel & German, Quilombo, Jaleo Flamenco, Zumba l Efren Muñoz and Puerto Ritmo de Guadalajara (Children's Academy). The Riviera Nayarit Latin Fest will be held at the bandstand of the Marina Nuevo Vallarta at the end of Boulevard Nayarit right before the mouth of the El Quelele Lagoon. (See map)

Corazón de Niña Fundraiser Breakfast at The River Café

On Saturday, August 9 at 10 am, the River Cafe will host a fundraiser breakfast to benefit the Corazón de Niña Girls' Shelter in Puerto Vallarta. Corazón de Niña is a local non-profit children’s shelter dedicated to providing housing, education, food, medical care, and love to young girls who have been removed from shockingly abusive situations. Rather than housing the girls in an institutional setting, Corazón de Niña provides a real home with house parents. Counseling, education and long-term support are priorities of the home. It is the only home for girls over the age of 12 in Puerto Vallarta. A donation of $200 pesos is suggested for the fundraiser breakfast. Advanced tickets may be purchased at The River Cafe, at Carol's Boutique on Basilio Badillo on the south side of Vallarta, or by calling Corazón de Nina at (322) 224-9209. Tickets will be available at the door for $225 pesos.
