CUC Presents 'Nuestro Amigo Americano' Oct 2nd & 3rd

October 1, 2014

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - In November of 2013, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the filming of Night of the Iguana in our city, the Centro Universitario de la Costa in Puerto Vallarta (CUC), in conjunction with private citizens and government authorities, created the 'John Huston International Film and Literature Chair' at the CUC.

On October 2nd & 3rd, 2014, to mark the Huston Film and Literature Chair's first year and the Centro Universitario de la Costa's 20th Anniversary in Puerto Vallarta, the CUC invites everyone to enjoy free screenings of Nuestro Amigo Americano ("Our American Friend"), a feature-length documentary about John Huston's life and work in Mexico.

The first screening will be held on Thursday, October 2 at 11:00 am at the CUC Cifuentes Auditorium, and the second will be presented on Friday, October 3 at 8:30 pm at the Los Arcos del Malecón amphitheater. Admission to both events is free.

The film, directed by Gerardo Lara, (who will be present at both events,) gives us insight into the work that Huston made in Mexico, because despite being one of the geniuses of international cinema who traveled and toured the world, towards the end of his life he decided to spend his last years in Mexico, where he also made many friends and colleagues.

Based on "The Open Book," a biography written by Huston's friend Bill Reed, Nuestro Amigo Americano is narrated by Tom Shaw who, as Huston's assistant, knew him well; adding strength and credibility to the film.

The 80-minute biographical documentary, produced by Metacine Productions, Rockefeller-MacArthur Foundation, and the National Fund for Culture and the Arts (Fonca), features appearances by John Huston, Dany Huston, Tony Huston, Allegra Huston, Ignacio López Tarso, Hugo Stiglitz, Gunter Gerzo, Luciana Cabarga Tom Show, Joan Lavender, and Michael Fitzgerald, among others.

Filming of the documentary began in 1998 but, due to a lack of resources and other challenges, it was not released until 2014, when it was first presented at the Cineteca Nacional on April 4th.
