Act II Entertainment Doesn't End When the Snow Melts

April 20, 2015

Act II STAGES is located in the Zona Romantica, on the corner of Insurgentes and Basilio Badillo, just a short stroll from the beach on the South side of Puerto Vallarta. For more info, call (322) 222-1512.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - Ok, so the snow has melted and our 'Snowbirds' have flown North, but that doesn't mean there's nothing to do in Puerto Vallarta. ACT II Entertainment has a great line-up of music, theater and amusement planned throughout the Spring and Summer months in The Red Room Cabaret, on The Main Stage, and at Encore Piano Bar.

Here's a look at what's playing this week:

Swingin' on a Star on the Main Stage

After the success of last December's debut of Swingin' on a Star, Elizabeth Ensor, David Lyons and Bob Bruneau are bringing the music of Johnny Mercer and Jimmy Van Heusen back to The Main Stage.

This rare tribute to two of American music's most prolific and colorful songwriters, whose lyrics and melodies were immortalized by Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, and many other legendary artists, will be performed for two shows only - on April 24th and 26th at 7 pm.

These two powerhouses wrote for Hollywood, Broadway, and dominated the world of popular music from the 30's through the 70's.

Jimmy Van Heusen composed over 800 songs, of which 50 songs became standards. Frank Sinatra recorded over 70 of Van Heusen's songs; including Come, Fly With Me and Ain't That a Kick in the Head. Van Heusen's songs are featured in over two hundred and twenty films, and he wrote the music for five Broadway musicals: Swingin' the Dream (1939); Nellie Bly (1946), Carnival in Flanders (1953), Skyscraper (1965), and Walking Happy (1966). Van Heusen was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Song 14 times, and won 4 times: in 1944, 1957, 1959, and 1963.

Johnny Mercer wrote the lyrics to over 1500 songs, including compositions for movies and Broadway shows. You'll hear a lot of his songs that will make you scratch your head and think, "I didn't know he wrote that!" Some called him a genius, some called him a folk-poet, and some compared his lyrics to the writings of some of the great authors of the Deep South. He was, and still is "Savannah, Georgia's Favorite Son." His songs include: Moon River, Blues in the Night, and That Old Black Magic. Mercer received nineteen Best Song Academy Award nominations, and won four times: in 1946, 1951, 1961, and 1962.

Both of these men, during their day, had personal fame that eclipsed their magnificent accomplishments. Swingin' on a Star gives you a glimpse into the world of music that Van Heusen and Mercer made possible - don't miss it!

Now Showing in The Red Room Cabaret:

Joan Houston - 'All That Jazz'
Local actress/singer Joan Houston has been packing the house with her first ever cabaret show, All That Jazz. With musical director Bob Bruneau at the piano, Joan takes audiences to another place... a Jazzy place. Don't miss the last performance on Saturday, April 25th at 7:30 pm.

'Dress Rehearsal' - An Exciting New Cabaret Show
Dress Rehearsal, an exciting new cabaret show directed by Nina Janik, premiered in The Red Room Cabaret on April 17th, featuring Michael Gibney, Eduardo Rocha, Kharla Barrigan and Mary Jo Nelson. Come join them for an evening of improv and song on April 24th, May 1st and May 8th at 9:30 pm.

Rob Knight - 'Forever Elvis'
Rob Knight has dazzled audiences this season with his matinee performance of Forever Elvis each Wednesday at 4 pm. His show moves to Thursdays at 7:30 pm all summer in The Red Room. Rob most enjoys singing the songs of Elvis' 1968 Comeback TV Special and the unforgettable Aloha and Las Vegas Concerts. Rob says he's honored to pay tribute to the most significant entertainer of all time, the King of Rock & Roll... Elvis Presley.

Wednesdays at Encore Piano Bar:

Bob's Karaoke Party - returns to Encore at 8 pm every Wednesday night over the summer. This is a great way to spend a cool summer evening with good friends and hear some local talent. Join us each week with your hosts David and Carol, and of course our favorite singer, Bobby Hirsch, Husband to famous local actress Patti Hirsch. Remember, Happy Hour is served from 6:00 pm till 8:00 pm, so come early for some two-for-one cocktails that'll warm up your vocal chords!

And that's just the beginning of a season full of entertainment! Act II will continue to bring the highest level of diversion to Puerto Vallarta throughout the spring and summer months. Whether you want to see a first-class theatrical production, listen to live music, or do a little singing yourself, at Stages, you can enjoy a complete evening of entertainment in any one (or all three) of their air-conditioned venues, along with delicious food and drink, in one convenient location.

Tickets to all shows can be purchased online at VallartaTickets.com or at the box office, which opens daily at 12:00 pm. The Act II Entertainment STAGES complex is located on the corner of Insurgentes and Basilio Badillo on the South side of Puerto Vallarta.
