PV's Casa Abina in the Vanguard of Ecological Buildings

April 2, 2015

"The charming traditional Mexican architecture building of Casa Abina hides the secret that saves home owners upwards of $400 a month on electric bills." - Casa Abina Developer, Jeremiah Coughlan

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - The Mexican Institute of Certified Normalization has named Puerto Vallarta the #1 municipality on sustainability in Mexico. The reason behind this is the government and society's concentrated effort in achieving this goal; Puerto Vallarta is constantly looking for ways to position itself as Mexico's most ecological friendly town.

Aligning with the federal government initiative "México Próspero" goals, Puerto Vallarta promotes the development of sustainable buildings. An outstanding example of this is Casa Abina, an eco-friendly development that's surrounded by the Sierra Madre Mountains.

Integrating perfectly with its surroundings, the traditional colonial Mexican architecture hides within some of the most extraordinary blends of top-notch modern Green designs.

You would never notice upon entering, gazing at a beautiful cantera fountain and tropical garden with palm trees, that the building is compliant with the United States "LEED principles" (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) requirements - and often even exceeds them.

LEED compliant buildings provide better living conditions for its inhabitants, less impact on the environment and reduce the life cycle cost of buildings; this certification guarantees the construction is in harmony with its environment, that all construction materials are of superior quality and from nearby sources, thus stimulating Puerto Vallarta's local economy.

According to information from Mexico's Secretary of Energy, the cost of electricity has tripled in the last 10 years. Looking for ways to help home owners save, Jeremiah Coughlan, the developer of Casa Abina, has used his more than forty years of experience to develop a building that can do just that.

Especially in Puerto Vallarta, electric bills don't come cheap, so the solar powered cooling system with HEPA filter (High Efficiency Particle Air Filter) installed in Casa Abina aims to reach zero, or close to zero, monthly electric bills!

Jeremiah Coughlan has managed to provide an example to Puerto Vallarta, where a green home can be aesthetically pleasing, with 3-meter high ceilings, near floor-to-ceiling windows, all double glazed/low-E windows, tropical woods of primavera and parota used in cabinets and closet doors, and many other magnificent features - yet with enough hi-tech integrated to help Mexico with its national ecological goals.

It's important that resources for future generations are not depleted when a house is built. LEED buildings produce less waste, building materials are carefully selected, and non-toxic paints are used. Many of these measures also translate to big savings for future owners, in other words, achieving what Puerto Vallarta is known to be #1 for, sustainability.

Coughlan, with his eye for details, raises Puerto Vallarta's ecology friendly policy up to new standards. some of the things he's included in Casa Abina's design are permeable paths, allowing water to percolate into the soil to replenish soil moisture and prevent unnecessary water run-off into the streets and rivers, and the use of drip irrigation in the native landscaping to reduce water usage.

During the II Regional Forum of the CFE (Mexico's power company) and the Northeast Electric Contractors association (ACEN), an Institute of Electric Investigation expert, Humberto Becerra, noted the importance of Mexico's untapped solar energy potential, saying that it could make Mexico a main player in the world's alternative energy field.

Mexico is launching an ambitious plan to promote the use of solar power energy in 500 thousand homes, and the development of Casa Abina in Puerto Vallarta is an outstanding example of what can be accomplished in Mexico when expert construction companies with the sensibility to integrate environment friendly policies set to work.

Casa Abina is composed of five condominiums and located in Colonia El Caloso, just a few minute walk to the market and finest restaurants in downtown Puerto Vallarta. Click HERE to see map.
