Vallarta Life: Meet Purr Project's Crazy Cat Ladies

June 15, 2016
New episode of 'Vallarta Life' are filmed regularly, and you can watch them all right here on Puerto Vallarta's Liveliest Website! BanderasNews.com, or on Laura's YouTube channel, TvPuertoVallarta.

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico - In this edition of Vallarta Life, Laura talks with Pamela Sullivan and Marilyn Khan, two Vallarta women who are sometimes referred to as "crazy cat ladies." But after they take you on a tour of the PuRR Project Cat Ranch, they don't seem quite so crazy, after all.

For some, it is a feline fantasy. For others, assisting their feline friends is a labor of love.

"My blood pressure is lower because I have so many kitties," says PuRR Project volunteer, Pamela Sullivan. "I think your life is just not complete without a cat, and it seems like the more you have, the happier you get."

"Why am I a cat lady?" asks Marilyn Khan of PuRR Project. "How could you not be a cat lady? Just look at them. They are wonderful, mystical creatures and they captured my heart."

PuRR Project is a no kill feline shelter located about 45 minutes north of downtown Puerto Vallarta. At present they have about 150 cats and kittens in residence. The purpose of the organization is to save as many of the homeless and abused cats on Vallarta's streets as possible. Workers hope to find them good homes. If they are not adoptable they live in relative comfort on the ranch for the rest of their lives.

"One of the reasons we love having people come out to the ranch is so they can sit in a chair, pet the cats, socialize with them, get them used to be held and being around humans because a lot of them, their only experience with humans has not been positive," says Marilyn. "When we adopt out a cat, they are spayed or neutered, have all their shots, all their vaccinations, they've been treated for worms, fleas, ear mites and whatever else, it is a healthy cat and very well adjusted."

"It costs a lot of money to run a shelter, especially one like this," says Pamela, "each one of these cats that lives in the yard costs about $100 to $300 USD per year and many of these cats live at the shelter for 10, 15 and up to 20 years, so you can do the math, it is very expensive. It costs us almost $40,000 a year to run the ranch completely."

If you would like to donate, take a ranch tour, adopt a cat or get more information, check out Purr Project's website, or Facebook page.
