Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - Puerto Vallarta's Public Library, Biblioteca Los Mangos, is not "just a library," it is a true cultural and community center. It is a place where children and adults go to read, study, use computers, take dancing lessons, play chess, learn English, watch movies and paint, among a multitude of other activities. Here's what's happening this week at Biblioteca Los Mangos:

Wednesday, May 10 at 7:00 pm
Movie Screening: "Street Angel"
Suggested donation $20 pesos


Directed by Frank Borzage, Street Angel is a 1928 silent film with a Movietone soundtrack and subtitles. Starring Janet Gaynor, who received an Academy Award for Best Actress in 1929, and Charles Farrell, Street Angel tells the story of Angela (Gaynor), a spirited young woman who finds herself involved in illegal ways of earning money to help pay for her ill mother's medicine. She is caught in the act, runs away from punishment, and finds her mother dead. Destitute and on the streets, she joins a traveling circus, where she meets all kinds of bohemian people, including Gino (Farrell), a vagabond painter. Though they fall in love, her past will not leave her alone.

Art Expo: "La Realidad en la Vida"

Artes Visuales del Centro Universitario de la Costa presents: La Realidad en la Vida, a collective exhibition by CUC Visual Arts students, in which each student worked in a personal way. In this art exhibit, you will see individualistic works with different themes, and various techniques.

Movie Screening: "Antonia's Line"

Cine Club El Muégano presents: Antonia's Line, a 1995 Dutch film written and directed by Marleen Gorris. The film, described as a "feminist fairy tale," tells the story of the independent Antonia (Willeke van Ammelrooy) who, after returning to the anonymous Dutch village of her birth, establishes and nurtures a close-knit matriarchal community. The film covers a breadth of topics, with themes ranging from death and religion to sex, intimacy, being lesbian, friendship and love. (In Dutch with subtitles)

Family Friendly Shopping: Mercado Los Mangos

Mercado Los Mangos is a "buy local" market offering a great selection of locally produced artisan products. Shop for fruits, vegetables, homemade baked goods, coffee, cheese, salsas, chocolates clothes, jewelry, arts & crafts and more! Come out for a day of family fun that includes live music and entertainment, a food area with international dishes made on site, and a children's craft tent. (Open every Saturday through the end of June.)

13th Annual Vallarta Altruism Festival at the CasaMagna Marriott Resort

Biblioteca Los Mangos is among the 20 local charities and non-profit organization that will be showcased at Vallarta's 13th Annual International Festival of Altruism. Every year Puerto Vallarta residents and visitors turn out for this event, which features top restaurants offering food and refreshments, live entertainment and the opportunity to learn more about the continuing and varying needs of some of our most valuable NGOs, and how you can get involved. Don't miss this very upbeat, wonderful evening of food, friendship and fun for just $400 pesos in advance (now available at Los Mangos) or $500 pesos at the door, with all proceeds divided equally among the participating charities.
