Review: Amy and Freddy 'Lit Up' The Palm Cabaret

March 28, 2018

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - Amy Armstrong has been entertaining Puerto Vallarta audiences at The Palm Cabaret for over a decade. She is a unique mix of stand-up comedian and cabaret singer. Amy has had weekly shows at The Palm all season and we were delighted that Freddy Allen was able to join her last week for 6 shows.

As professionally trained musicians, Amy and Freddy's paths crossed during a chance meeting at a Chicago cabaret 20 years ago and the careers of these extraordinarily talented musicians merged.

Like many gifted musical groups, Amy and Freddy are more than the sum of their combined talents. Together they bring remarkable musicality, humor, spontaneity and charisma to their shows.

With Chicago as their home base for many years, they've performed in cabarets, theaters, main stages and cruise lines around the world. Over the past dozen years, they have repeatedly performed in Puerto Vallarta and are loved and appreciated by their audiences here.

If you've ever had the opportunity to glimpse into the 'music business,' you may wonder how Amy and Freddy, after more than 20 years in the 'biz,' can stay so positive, motivated and excited about what they do. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that these two guide their own careers, always looking to the future for new avenues to express their musical and creative talents.

With an extensive musical theater background, they both continue to move in new directions with their love of music and performing. As accomplished as they are, they love new challenges and seem ready to pursue new opportunities that come their way.

Freddy and his husband Matt moved from Chicago to Iowa this past year to be closer to Matt’s family. Freddy continues to pursue a performing career there as well.

Amy has been living in St. Louis and performs solo and with her band, 'The Hitmen.' They presented a series of incredible shows to the PV audience earlier in the season. Amy will return to St. Louis shortly to continue entertaining audiences there.

And of course, Amy and Freddy will perform together throughout the year on cruise ships and at venues in Palm Springs, San Diego and other locations.

Last Friday night, I had the privilege of seeing their show at The Palm Cabaret. With Freddy on keyboards and harmony, and Amy on lead vocals and humor, we enjoyed another entertaining night with these dear people. Amy loosened up the audience with her amazing wit and off-the-cuff story telling. And Freddy's love of jazz influences his playing in the most wonderful way!

They started out with the jazzy song, Mr. Saturday Dance. We heard familiar songs like, Don't Get Around Much Anymore and the Lady Gaga standard, Million Reasons. We enjoyed Freddy's original song written for Amy, I Can't Get Laid Blues. With Amy's gorgeous voice we loved, Glorious and Big, Blonde and Beautiful.

The Dionne Warwick favorite, I Say A Little Prayer for You and the classic Carole King tune, Natural Woman were wonderful!

Freddy played and sang the Fast Waters jazz classic, Ain't Misbehavin', and spoke about his grandparents' musical influence in his life.

And we all loved the Eric Clapton (from 'Unplugged') number, Nobody Knows You.

After huge applause and coaxing, we persuaded them to come back for an encore performing the infamous, "Pussy Song," that we all joined in on.

Amy and Freddy are very special and dear to their audience and we thank them for their years of entertaining us with their remarkable talent. As I told Amy this past week, "No one makes me laugh like you do and no one makes me enjoy music more than you!"

We wish these two beautiful people a wonderful summer and hope we see them again soon. You can catch Amy's final 2 shows of the season at The Palm on Wednesday, March 28th at 7:00 pm and on Friday, March 30th at 9:30 pm.

Open 7 nights a week through the end of March, The Palm Cabaret and Bar features two shows per night, one at 7:00 pm and the other at 9:30 pm. For more information and the remainder of the 2017-2018 season's line-up, visit ThePalmCabaret.com.
