Artist, Muralist and Photographer
a profile of Joe Lusk by Erich Haubrich

You can contact Joe Lusk at gringolusk@yahoo.com
You may have seen his art and not even known it. His murals grace the walls of many upscale villas and local businesses, his phenomenal paintings reflect a depth that few others are able to master and his photography speaks to the color and culture of the heart of Mexico.

Long-time Puerto Vallarta resident Joe Lusk has used his depth of talent in many ways since he moved here from Toronto, Ontario. Starting out as a starving artist and working his way up to being one of the most sought-after masters of his media. There is a long waiting list for those wishing to adorn their spaces with his deep and engaging strokes of the brush. The textures and depth of Joe's mural and finish painting are almost photorealistic. I was shown a room where Joe had painted tile and cracks on a wall and had to actually touch the surface to know that the cracks, tile and other details were a product of a careful and delicate brush stroke.

Recently, between his commissioned murals and paintings Joe has been using his finely-honed skills as a photographer to capture amazing images that speak to the very spirit of Puerto Vallarta. He claims that many of his amazing photos are the result of "being at the right place at the right time, being lucky" as luck would have it he has hundreds of world class photos which he plans to publish soon in a book and calendar, a portion of the proceeds being earmarked to benefit local children's causes.

Joe is a rarity in this modern world, a sort of renaissance man in the new millennium, a painter, photographer, writer, musician, intellectual and, at times, barroom philosopher. He's also quite a character, with a bright sense of humor, and a lot of caring for the people of the community that has become his home. He spends much of his time working to help local charities, donating time and money to help those less fortunate.

We're fortunate to have people such as Joe to add artistic flavor to our city, to capture and create the colorful imagery with camera and paintbrush. People like Joe are just one of the facets of existence here that make life a little more interesting.
